"Spring and early fall are the best times to plant new lawns because of the moderate temperatures and additional rainfall. However, contrary to public, and some professional opinions, sod can be planted safely all year long . Remember, lawns can withstand inclement weather, better, when wet. Below is a listing of some of the most popular grasses and some of their characteristics. The information provided is derived from our years of personal experience in dealing with these grasses, and is not the result of any scientific experiment or studies . Remember, this is just a partial list. If you don't see your grass of choice listed, call our office for more information, availability and pricing. Some of the available varieties include:

St. Augustine
Without question the most widely used grass in Central Texas . Develops into a thick lush lawn that many say is the most beautiful of Central Texas lawns. These grasses do well in full sun or partial shade.

Raleigh
Raleigh St. Augustine was introduced in 1980 and is the most recognized and sold variety. It has excellent shade tolerance, requiring 3-5 hours of sunlight daily. However, it does require slightly more watering than other grasses. It is most susceptible to diseases like gray leaf spot in the summer and brown patch in the fall. Both diseases are enhanced by over-watering.

Palmetto
Above ground, Palmetto is virtually identical in appearance to Raleigh . However, it is below ground, that Palmetto distinguishes itself. The root system of Palmetto is much deeper, allowing it to retrieve much needed water from the soil.….

Bermuda *
For the most part these grasses thrive in full sun situations, and are more disease and drought resistant than St. Augustine .

Common
Although, often sold as turf, it is a native grass that can be seen growing just about anywhere. For what it lacks in appearance, it makes up for in durability.

Tifway 419
Our most commonly used Bermuda . It is well suited for home lawns, athletic fields, golf course fairways and tees. It is a semi-dwarfed grass with medium fine texture, and has excellent weed and disease control.

Celebration
More shade tolerant than the other Bermudas. Although, it is a fairly new variety, it is gaining considerable notoriety.

Some other notable varieties of Bermuda include: Tif 328, Tif Dwarf, Tif Sport, Baby Bermuda, Quick Start, and more….

Buffalo *
These are full sun grasses, known for their tolerance of extreme drought situations, and conversely, for their susceptibility to weeds.

Density
Buffalo 's newest variety, is said to have a much denser growth pattern, thereby, reducing the inherent problem of weeds.

Zoysia*
Although not as shade tolerant as St. Augustine , Zoysias do well in partial shade, or full sun. These grasses are considered to be the best of both worlds. Disease and drought resistant like Buffalo , but because of its dense growth pattern, weed problems are minimal.

Pallisades

A fine bladed grass, slightly larger than Bermuda

Planting Tips

  • Sod should be considered a perishable item. This is especially true during the hot Central Texas summers. Grass can survive on the pallet for varying lengths of time, a week or so during cold winter days, to less than a day during summer months. The general rule should be to plant it as quickly as possible and water immediately.
  • New lawns must be watered regularly, especially during the first few weeks to establish a new root system. Watering schedules should be adjusted dependent upon temperatures and rainfall. Keep in mind it is almost impossible to over-water during the first week.
Spring and early fall are the best times to plant new lawns because of the moderate temperatures and additional rainfall. However, contrary to public, and some professional opinions, sod can be planted safely all year long . Remember, lawns can withstand inclement weather, better, when wet.
